Thursdays and Covers

One more day before the liberation of Friday acts as a springboard into the realm of Weekend-ness. Thus, it is Thursday and on Thursdays we like to post an assortment of covers for your musical pleasure. So, enjoy.

Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night
After seeing Last Days last night, it's safe to say my ancient love for Nirvana has entered a period of rebirth. Kurt covered many songs in his musical career and did a handfull at their infamous MTV Unplugged session, this being one of them. Originally recorded by one of Kurt's favorite artists, Leadbelly, this song only improves when Cobain does it...in my opinion.

James Mercer - Harvest
The Shins next album is due out this year, with (obviously) a lot of anticipation buzzing around it. Well, as the buzzing rightfully continues I have a James Mercer (lead singer/songwriter) solo set that should hold me over until then. One of the songs in that set is a Neil Young cover that Mercer not only makes his own, but does so quite well. Surprise..surprise, right?

Stars - This Charming Man
2005 was a huge year for this band on many levels, and opening for a surging and sold out Death Cab tour didn't hurt their reputations with fans of Gibbard's band. This song has been covered by numerous bands, ironically including DCFC, but their version does a nice job of blending mellow keyboards and beats with The Smiths' original guitar riff.
