Today, 94 years ago, the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank. Now, those that have been following the blog for a bit know that I enjoy posting on tidbits of history and music. With an event as popular as the sinking of the "unsinkable", I can't pass this opportunity up. My good friend Matt Cook and I took heed of this historical event and began compiling songs that we thought could fit the 1912 marine tragedy. The following is a compilation of some of the best Titanic related tracks that we could think of, very sarcastic commentary, a funny photoshopped picture of us, and one of the longest posts I've ever made.
Enjoy.

[MP3] Elliott Smith - Don't Go Down
Despite his best advice to the Titanic and it's passengers, the ship continued to plummet downward. Perhaps people will listen to Elliot's advice and not snub him of an Oscar that Celine Dion's Titanic ballad received. Otherwise he might have to sink another ship.
[MP3] Foo Fighters - Learn To Fly
If a genie arose from the last remaining smoke stack on the Titanic and offered the passengers a single wish, so long as their wish was in the form of a song title, it would be this song.
[MP3] Third Eye Blind - Never Let You Go
Rumor has it that front-man Stephen Jenkins wrote this song with a tear in his eye and a nose full of meth, on the way back from the theater (after seeing the film for the sixth time).
[MP3] Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely
Thom Yorke was originally asked to compose the theme song for the film, but after submitting this as his entry, James Horner went with the slightly more heartfelt Celine Dion piece.
[MP3] The Paper Chase - The Sinking Ship, The Grand Applause
This song was obviously about the movie and not the actual story. Nobody applauded for the first.. Except for that one jerk who couldn't get passed the irony of this ship being known as the "unsinkable."
[MP3] Modest Mouse - Grey Ice Water
Whether or not you're standing by the grey ice water, I would definitely agree with Isaac Brock's assessment of Billy Zane's role in this movie. "You've got yourself a crazy lover" Did anyone else love him in smash hits such as The Phantom and The Mummy? Billy Zane = Insane.
[MP3] Creed - One Last Breath
I'm almost certain that Scott Stapp has offered the world nothing more than the comical placement of this song title. Much like the Titanic, Creed's music has been responsible for thousands of casualties or forcing people to dive headfirst from a 6-story ship onto a 3-ton propeller, spiraling toward an icey doom. Like that one guy..
[MP3] My Chemical Romance - Drowning Lessons
What insensitively soulless creatures put this song on the commemorative mix? Oh, I guess that was us.
[MP3] Damien Rice - Cold Water
Leo said it feels like, "A million knives stabbing your body all at once.." Damien Rice says pish posh! Honestly, if Damien had been singing this song during the sinking, there would have been far less fuss created over the whole ordeal.
[MP3] Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On
Oscar Winner? Number One Smash Hit? Quadruple-Times Platinum? I'm just going to say it, Celine Dion was responsible for the sinking of Titanic.
[MP3] Modest Mouse - Styrofoam Boots / It's All Nice On Ice, Alright
A band that is truly "On top of the world" in my opinion. It just so happens they have a lot more in common with the Titanic than we thought. Float On, a mere coincidence? We think not.
[MP3] Explosions In The Sky - Six Days At The Bottom Of The Ocean
Originally playing as Explosions in the Transatlantic (flare guns?), they encountered some legal complications with Death Cab's Transatlanticism, but then decided to leave all Titanic references in their songs. This song title being derived from how long Leonardo DiCaprio is capable of holding his breath.
[MP3] The Lucksmiths - Shipwreck Coast
There is something more dramatic about running into a floating chunk of ice as opposed to a coastline.
[MP3] Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - In This Home On Ice
For cinematic reasons only, James Cameron was forced to edit the famous "portrait" scene with Rose. Her iPod shuffle was replaced with the Heart of the Ocean necklace. A fun fact: Rose was listening to CYHSY during her portrait, wayyy before they got big. 94 years later, CYHSY are finally playing Bonnaroo.
[MP3] Devendra Banhart - My Ships
Mr. Banhart could probably sing about partial birth abortions and we would still have a smile on our faces. This is just another example of how homeless neo-hippies are making the world a better place, one song at a time.
[MP3] Modest Mouse - Dog Paddle
During the mandatory safety video and lifejacket awareness sessions, Modest Mouse actually provided an appropriate song for the swimming challenged.
[MP3] The Unicorns - Sea Ghost
A unicorn is a horse with a horn. The score was written by James Horner, a man with no horn. So it comes as no surprise to us that Mr. Horner left this song off the soundtrack. Something to do with horn envy.
[MP3] Coldplay - Swallowed In The Sea
Thinking the Titanic was a trade ship, Chris Martin personally called Mother Nature (also the name of his third child) and ordered an iceberg. In exchange for the floating assassin of ice to teach the unfair traders a lesson, Martin agreed to write a song 100 miles long for Mother Nature. Now that is a fair trade, boys and girls.
[MP3] Dido - White Flag
After facing a lawsuit for mocking a Captain's loyalty in going down with their respective ships, Dido then collaborated with Eminem in an attempt to clear her tarnished name. White Flags and White Rappers, they're all the same, right?
[MP3] The Microphones - Ice
"So I stayed beneath / As the water above me froze / From under the ice / I saw you in warm clothes"
Do you think Jack Dawson was happy that Rose let go? Yeah, he wasn't to thrilled about the combination of dying and sinking.
[MP3] Ugly Casanova - Ice On The Sheets
I am the captain, you're in the galley, look at an old photograph, look at the ice. So many references to the Titanic, but is anyone really surprised that Isaac Brock could poke fun at a tragedy such as this?
[MP3] Fall Out Boy - Sugar, We're Goin' Down
I would say that most passengers would admit that their Titanic experience was slightly more than they bargained for.

[ZIP] Titanic - Original Soundtrack
Doesn't all of this just make you want to go watch your favorite 3-hour movie?

Oh my, when i saw the last song I totally just burst out laughing!
Great Choices, you guys are really history-philes.
Thanks for turning me on to We Will Build by the way. I just featured them yesterday in a post: GreatBody of Water Post
I'm also starting a featurette (tomorrow of monday) that is going to feature band from the letters "A to Z and Everything in Between", so if you could check it out throughout the week that would be really cool.
None of the Modest Mouse tracks work
Why don't you not post broken links douche! Worthless ass!
But overall, pretty damn good. I can't get the image of the guy nailing that prop out of my head. That made the horrible movie worth it. Along with DiCaprio dieing. That was almost as cool. I just wish they showed a close up of that guy's dome-piece hitting that huge chunk of steel. I would have that movie in my collection right now if that was the case.
some of the links were getting buggy, but they should all work now.
ok, we know by now that your musical taste and creative ideas for posts are up there... one thing we didn't realise is, you're easy on the eyes... handsome lads ;)
creed?? dido?? wtf
A awsome new band:

Listen and enjoy
This blog got to be the only one commemorating some obscure historical event. lol.
very clever.
You're lacking the most important artists:
Gavin Bryars - the sinking of the titanic
Aphex twin did a remix from one of the songs from the album on 26 mixes for cash.
Unrelated to the movie but worth more than any of the songs on this list, (not that I don't like all of them, it's just that they seem little in comparison).
Good post, btw.
yeah but igif has a stick "rock only" rule.
a couple of funny gurgling electronica would be hilarious too.
But this is a super funny post. There should be some kinda award for this sort of stuff.
gawd, audioblogger land need to organize for this sort of stuff.
well you're right squashed, the post is hilarious :)
this post is genius.
Great post!
