LOTD: Thom Yorke, "Harrowdown Hill"

[MP3] Thom Yorke - Harrowdown Hill

Don't walk the plank like I do
You will dispensed with, when you've become
Inconvenient

Up on Harrowdown Hill, Where you used to go school
That's where I - That's where I'm lying now
Did I fall or was I pushed? Did I fall or was I pushed?
And where's the blood? Where's the blood?
But I'm coming home, I'm coming home to make it alright so dry your eyes
We think the same things at the same time, we just can't do anything about it
We think the same things at the same time, we just can't do anything about it

So don't ask me, ask the Ministry
Don't ask me, ask the Ministry
We think the same things at the same time, there are so many of us so you can't count
We think the same things at the same time, there are so many of us so you can't count

Can you see me when I'm running? Can you see me when I'm running?
Away from them, Away from them
I can't take the pressure, No one cares if you live or die
They just want me gone, they want me gone
But I'm coming home, I'm coming home to make it alright so dry your eyes
We think the same things at the same time, we just can't do anything about it
We think the same things at the same time, there are too many of us so you can't; there are too many of us so you can't count

It was a slippery slippery slippery slope
It was a slippery slippery slippery slope
I feel me slipping in and out of consciousness
I feel me slipping in and out of consciousness
I feel me

Thom Yorke's solo effort is pretty awesome. Despite the lack of Greenwood Inc., Yorke still manages to perfect some exquisite solo sounds..Not that it was a huge shocker to all of the Radiohead fans. This is one of my favorite tracks from the new album. Between the simple (yet amazing) guitar riff at the end of the track to the uber-powerful and emotionally charged line, "Don't ask me, ask the Ministry!" After reading a few theories on this song's origin, a lot of fans seem to think Thom wrote it about Dr. David Kelly; a Microbiologist who killed himself because of the pressure that surrounded him regarding weapons in Iraq. Kelly killed himself by slashing his wrist and jumping into the river at the bottom of Harrowdown Hill... This song becomes even more eerie if thats the the case. Read more theories and about Dr. David Kelly.

all I can say is the two other sites I know that have posted Yorke's new songs have gotten cease and desist orders and are having issues with their hosting companies. I'd be careful....

but thanks for the track nonetheless.

Thom Yorke hit it on the head: everyone knows Kelly was murdered -- even the paramedics on the scene have filed legal statements that *they* don't think it was suicide -- but (everyone) thinks they can't do anything about it.

See our Kelly discussion threads on GUARDIAN Unlimited Talk ... and my posting under TELEGRAPH's blog "Blair and the Footie."

Al Stewart gave a concert near here,
in Springfield Illinois, and I was
talking about the "bottle green
Bentley" aura of Kelly's death with him.

Yorke has real guts ... and integrity.

You wet behind the ears foolio !
Have you ever read a bloody newspaper ? Dr David Kelly "committed suicide" by slashing his wrists and lying at the foot of a tree on Harrowdown hill.. the Thames is not involved in any way.
The two ambulance people who found his body, who have 30 years experience between them have NEVER witnessed a "suicide" in this manner with so little blood. They have since "retired" from the ambulance service and apparently cannot be traced, even by reporters from the Sunday Times... Now put the pieces together and listen to the song again....

It's my favorite song of the album too.
Thank you for your opinion, the lyrics and for the story. It gives more sense to the song.

That's the absolute song, it takes you away, far, far away from this world... One of the best songs I've ever heard. Yorke is a genious...

Perhaps this goes without saying, but Yorke is on record saying that this song is indeed about the death of Dr. Kelly.

I can't see why you rip an album before it's release and share it with others; pay for the album when it comes out - respect the artist.

I don't care about the teories I think Thom is a brilliant artist like no one else his music with all the integrants of radiohead is the best but I think he done the best in this last album alone, I'm very happy with the album and I still love him like all of us!

Nice one, another political "statement" from the genius that is Thom Yorke. I wish he'd quit moaning about irrelevant details and write something about Iraq when it was occupied by a vicious unelected fascist. How about Zimbabwe or N Korea mate? Bloody fool.

Some of you need to quit focusing on your own tiny little lives and tastes.

This is not an irrelevant issue ... it was the basis of a declaration of war by the Coallition (of the wicked) Governments on the innocent Iraqi people.

How many more US/UK service men and women will be sacrificed before people like Thom Yorke are listened to?

"We think the same things at the same time, we just can't do anything about it."
