Thursdays and Covers (Special Edition!)

Here is a special edition of Covers on a Thursday! All of the following covers are brand spankin' new! Each cover has just been released or are coming out very soon. Enjoy these covers while their new!

[MP3] Jonah Mantraga - A New England
Jonah Mantraga (aka Onelinedrawing) has an immediately recognizable voice. A voice that over the past years I have come to really enjoy and appreciate. This new cover (of a Billy Bragg song) is excellent! Did anyone else catch the first few lines being lyrics of a Simon and Garfunkel song?! Jonah's new cover is being featured on a 12" split with Frank Turner. The four-song 12" features two covers by each artist with songs such as "You Are My Sunshine," "All I Want," and a great cover of The Lemonheads' "The Outdoor Type," which you can read about at Music For Robots. The vinyl just released to the web a few days ago (not hitting stores til Sept. 5) and there are only 20 copies left of the first pressing! Click here to check out the vinyl and click here to check out an older post with Onelinedrawing covering The Beatles!

[MP3] Naama Hillman - Ring Of Fire
This lady is fresh out of my inbox! Her record company is releasing a new five-song EP titled In Between The Lights, which you can download for free here. Her voice is nearly the definition of tranquility. This cover, which I had no idea was written by June Carter Cash and not Johnny, is pretty damn neat. Perhaps its the awkward switch of the deep "I'm a badass" vocal chords for those of mellow "See you at Lilith Fair" chords.

[MP3] The Format - The Lottery Song
Acting as a bonus track on iTunes to their latest release, Dog Problems, Nate (lead singer) had to inform me that the reason it didn't make the album was due to the fact that it was a simple cover. After the color of embarrassment had left my face, they talked about their love for Harry Nilsson and why they covered the song. After listening to [MP3] the original and a few of Nilsson's albums, I can see why they love him and only ask myself why I haven't. Regardless, this cover is very very awesome.
