I Am Not A Crook!

What is, quite possibly, the greatest scandal in American History reached a dramatic conclusion on this very day in 1974. Watergate had been snowballing down a political hill of fury for nearly three years, plaguing the political existence of Richard Nixon. Yes, it was over the course of two years that two reporters (Woodward and Bernstein) had all but brought the Watergate incident to a national spotlight. It was those two reporters that helped to force the first ever resignation of a U.S. President. While Nixon continued to famously claim "I am not a crook!" to the public, today marks the date that he resigned from office. While we all wait for the new documentary showing (essentially) John Lennon vs. Nixon, here are some "celebration for resignation" MP3s!

[MP3] Jack Johnson - Mediocre Bad Guys
[MP3] The Weakerthans - Letter of Resignation
[MP3] Radiohead - Exit Music (For A Film)
[MP3] Nirvana - All Apologies
[MP3] Brian Webb - Shame
[MP3] Ray LaMontagne - Trouble
[MP3] Sea Wolf - You're a Wolf
[MP3] Sound Team - It's Obvious What's Happening Here
[MP3] Death Cab For Cutie - President Of What?
[MP3] Sufjan Stevens - A Good Man Is Hard To Find
[MP3] The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
[MP3] Bel Auburn - How Not To Get Caught
[MP3] Richard Nixon - I Am Not A Crook!

Visit the Nixon Library or, better yet, go rent the movie Dick. Whatever you do, hopefully this resignation has been a little more enjoyable to listen to.

It was an interesting time for sure. I hitchhiked across the country that summer and was visiting a friend at Michigan State the night he resigned. Later went to a disco - how we went from all that great innovative rock to disco during Nixon's time in office is beyond me - it was the beginning of the end for good music for a long, long time.

A sad time in our nation's history indeed, but with the current state of the MidEast and Muslim extremists threatening to blow up American-bound flights, this reflects that the context of Watergate was certainly a simpler time. Still, one song referring to the Watergate legacy of distrust is still appropriate today: "Gimme Me Some Truth" by Beatle John.

"Here's to the State of Richard Nixon" by Phil Ochs. The definitive classic.

I did a nice interview with Bel Auburn. They answered some questions I sent them, and provided some great answers.
