Spin's 25 Greatest Live Bands Now!

Spin Magazine has compiled another delicious list for us to roll our eyes/applaud/debate about. I agree with some of what they've compiled but not all of it. Take a look at their "Top 25" and see if you agree with their list.

1. U2
2. The Stooges
3. Arcade Fire
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers
5. Radiohead
6. White Stripes
7. Green Day
8. The Hives
9. Prince
10. The Dirtbombs
11. Queens Of The Stone Age
12. Turbonegro
13. My Chemical Romance
14. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
15. Riverboat Gamblers
16. The Flaming Lips
17. The Roots
18. My Morning Jacket
19. Art Brut

22. LCD Soundsystem
23. AFI
24. The Mars Volta
25. Comets On Fire

[MP3] Queens Of The Stone Age - Feel Good Hit Of The Summer

I haven't seen U2, but I'd be willing to bet that Radiohead could put on a better live show. In fact, why the hell is Radiohead only at number five? That seems a little unjust. I'm glad to see that Arcade Fire and My Morning Jacket got nods but puzzled why the Flaming Lips are so low. What do you guys think about this list? Who would you add?

They've obviously never seen Kanye West live.

flaming lips at 16, totally insane!!!!

where the hell is pearl jam on this list. i've seen them a handful of times, and they're the best live show out there, hands down.

U2 do put on quite a production. I find I connect more with Radiohead shows, but both U2 shows I've been to have been great and when it comes to set/show design they're second to none. I'm not surprised to see them at the top of the list.

But yes, it is odd that Radiohead and Flaming Lips are as low as they are, and not to see Peter Gabriel or Spearhead on the list.

Jason said...

I have been to four U2 concerts and none of them have even come close to the Radiohead show I went to. Radiohead put on quite a show...Easily the second best show I have gone to.

The deal with the Flaming lips is this..back in the mid 90's they were in my top 5 live bands but now I just find it all a bit sad. Their shows used to blow me away, now I just roll my eyes and mumble "you're trying way too hard".

i saw both the yyy's and bloc aprty this summer. blox party was much better and deserve a spot on the list. there show at the greek in berkely was one of the best times i've ever had at a concert.

derek said...

how many times could i spell bloc party wrong in one comment? or use the wrong their... dont forget to spell check kids.

nicole s. said...

yyy's are a weak choice for top 25 - but what else do you expect from spin?

Tom said...

I think that the Arcade Fire are appropriate and would agree that "Blox Aprty" should probably be on the list along with Les Savy Fav. I was questioning why Nine Inch Nails didn't make the list. Anyone who has been to one of their shows knows that they are absolutely devastating live... the lights, the intensity. I felt like I was witnessing the Apocalypse first hand. They pace their shows very well and almost manipulate the audiences' mind with their use of setlist alone.
FINAL THOUGHT: I have heard that Great White puts on a really explosive live set.

connor said...

props to arcade fire. but no Sigur Ros???

Jim said...

This may sound so totally old school (remember I'm a geezer), but Depeche Mode still have the ability to make a stadium audience stand in awe.

Michael said...

They haven't seen Mute Math

I wouldnt put most of those bands in a top 25 of any list

I must be the only person left who can't find much good about Art Brut.

Having seen both Radiohead and U2 live twice I think that U2 do win out, although it is close.

They aren't really that comparable, as U2 do the whole stadium thing and really put on a show that moves you.

Radiohead are excellent live.

In a way, why worry who is better? If U2 are great live and Radiohead are great live, why try to rank them? Just enjoy them

Anonymous said...

Radiohead not before the Red Hot Chili Peppers? Lame. Also, Flaming Lips at #16? They put on one of the best live shows around. I think it's kind of odd to see The Hives on there. PRINCE should've been higher than #9. I personally don't care for U2, but I guess I kind of see the choice for their #1 spot. My Morning Jacket is pretty good live too.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't put any of those bands in my top 25. Of any sort.

(With the possible exception of YYYs.)

Anonymous said...

Just listening to a live Radiohead album is an amazing experience. My Morning Jacket's performance does kick a lot of ass; a lot of my friends at Lollapalooza didn't care for MMJ at all until their righteous live show. Flaming Lips...they built their live show to be good from the beginning because they sucked at making music. But now they're good at making music and I'd rather listen to more of it live than giggle while hitting balloons around for hours. It just gets boring after awhile listening to him talk so much in between songs and watching him shoot confetti over and over. Sorrrrry.

eamon said...

TOM, you dick. that one hurt.

jason said...

They've obviously never seen Motley Crue live. Most amazing show I've ever seen. And where is KISS???

Anonymous said...

there's not one band on there that isn't a rock band. so no singer song writers are good live?

stupid

Anonymous said...

the fact that my chemical romance is on this list proves it's complete worthlessness

Anonymous said...

Radiohead should be without doubt #1...though, competing with U2, I would accept #2. Drive-by Truckers should be on there, if you don't know them, look into them (don't let the name put you off, they're unbelievable).

Matt said...

u2 is good. They're number one on my list

Anonymous said...

this list just shows how pathetic spin mag has become.

and u2 is the most overrated band of all time.

Anonymous said...

my chemical romance and the hives? give me a break.

Crc said...

to anyone posting "why is such and such on the list" Have you seen said bands live? no? shutup.

One Died Simply said...

Where is Pearl Jam!?!?

Anonymous said...

gogol bordello! about time they get some recognized! dropkick murpheys should also be on there.

Popp said...

Broken Social Scene and Sigur Ros were robbed. I love Arcade Fire's album, but both were better than them live.

scot[t]us said...

no wilco? this list is garbage.

Taylor said...

I'd say 10-15 years ago U2 were the best live band hands down, but now I think Radiohead are probably better. I've only seen U2 so it's hard to compare.

I heavily agree with those saying that Sigur Ros got robbed.

k said...

what about bright eyes? it's a fantastic show every time filled with smoke, fevers, and mirrors. haha. but seriously, they should be on there. cut afi or something. also, ryan adams puts on a damn good one. come to think of it, wtf? this list doesn't seem to make much sense at all, with haphazardly placed radiohead and no wilco or sigur ros. i don't know. maybe i just have weird taste.

iliana said...

i'm happy to see some against me! love. :)

Jeff said...

U2 are so overblown live it's not at all exciting. RHCP suck live. QUOTSA are very boring live.

The Hives, Arcade Fire, and Radiohead are all great. I agree, where is Sigur Ros? Where is DAFT PUNK? Their show at Coachella was the best performance I have seen at Coachella.

Anonymous said...

Where is Pearl Jam, Sigur Ros, and Explosions in the Sky? U2 is as Disney-Mainstream as it gets. Come on!

Anonymous said...

i stopped @ #8 - "the hives".

awful.

Anonymous said...

I have seen 14 of those bands and I must say they were all pretty good sans the yyy's(unmemorable).

3. Arcade Fire
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers
5. Radiohead
6. White Stripes
7. Green Day
8. The Hives
11. Queens Of The Stone Age
14. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
15. Riverboat Gamblers
16. The Flaming Lips
17. The Roots
19. Art Brut
22. LCD Soundsystem
24. The Mars Volta

Flaming Lips were probably the best out of the bunch. I was glad to see the Gamblers and Art Brut because they both are great live. A few they may have overlooked would be Tool for the rock show and Ben Lee for the feel good show and the mother F'n Hold Steady for a bar show.

Carlos D. said...

Kanye West? Certainly he's working hard live, but the two times I caught him this summer were pretty disappointing. He kept running out of breath.

And nothing sounded as good as the album other than Jesus Walks.

Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Art Brut - A definite two, three and four on my list, respectively.

But the mack daddy's of the Live spectacle in my book are fucking DAFT PUNK.

This shit is ridiculous: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1tn0AkcX0A

Anonymous said...

Why no Sigur Ros???? They put on the most amazing live show i've ever seen, easily.

Anonymous said...

I think Spin names these ridiculous bands nobody has ever heard of, or ever will hear of, cuz they think is sounds cool and cutting edge. But what it really looks like is bullshit.

Where the fuck is Pearl Jam? Pearl Jam should be firmly planted some place in the top 5, no questions.

But wait....I guess Art Brut puts on a hell of a show...for all 23 people he performs in front of.

The list makers at Spin should be kicked in the ass 100 times.

Anonymous said...

ive seen green day in concert and i didnt think they deserved to b where they are. i mean it was a good show dont get me wrong but, i jus think that mcr should have done better than them bcuz they had an awesome concert.

Ewan said...

Muse are the best live band out there today, no doubt about it.
I saw them supported by MCR today and I actually cannot explain just how better Muse were than them, they wiped the fucking floor.

Anonymous said...

Definitely not exactly what I'd have picked, but yeah, Spin aims to please its readers, I guess.

I would have listed Radiohead at least higher than the Chili Peppers, if not giving U2 a run for their money. What's impressive to me about U2 is the number of true music fans from all ages and genres they attract: not only do you have the diehard U2 fans who know all the words to even the least popular songs, you have the diehard music fans who know the words to all of the snippets Bono sings throughout each show. Hearing U2 cover Instant Karma! might have been the highlight of the show of theirs I saw last year.

Spin said...

1. I like Drive-by Truckers, but they are one of the worst live bands I've ever seen. Probably the only rock band in the world that plays s-l-o-w-e-r live than in the studio.
2. If you "can't find much good about Art Brut," you ain't seed them live.
3. If they were still together, the Jesus Lizard would've wiped the floor with any of the bands on the list. It's a fun idea, though.

Anonymous said...

noone has mentioned the mars volta. have you guys seen them? have you read the 'best moment' quote on the article? When you see them you wil "suddenly understand what your loser uncle meant when he said you actually had to see Zeppelin to understand how amazing they were?" They are that amazing. Especially if you compare their preformances to the album songs. So much of it is improvisation its knee wobbling.

Anonymous said...

You're completely right about the mars volta. While similar, the live preformances music is so much more unbelievable. so many breakdowns and the band is incredibly tight, always coming together at the same time. If any of you have seen 'at the drive in', which also was an AMAZING live band. You would realize the singer and guitarist are fing amazing and jon theodore, the drummer for the mars volta, could quite possibly be the best drummer alive. You'de have to see him preform to realize it. If you've ever listened to deloused, they played the entire album with extra improv and rocked out for sooooo long. Bixler (singer) even chugs a honey bear halfway through. If any of you haven't seen the mars volta... i highly suggest you do. You're opinions are sure to change. the mars volta live is as sweet as the mars volta but BETTEr.

Robertocure said...

The Cure?

Depeche Mode?

wehbe said...

Realistically Pearl Jam should top that list. They're the best live band in the world right now. And probably have been for past 10 years.

Anonymous said...

mars volta freakin rules

Anonymous said...

Where the hell is tool?

Anonymous said...

MUSE should definitely be in there, Their sets from this years Black holes and Revelations tour have been fantastic and they are one of the loudest sounding bands ive heard. They have that three piece 'Rush' sort of vibe goin' on.

But The Flaming Lips are by far and away the best band i have seen live. And im sure if this was 1995 then you would all agree, but the more recent shows are more chilled out and positive, you gotta smile when seeing the Lips.

Ian Brown too and Fratellis, underrated.
Heard that Hot Chip put on a good show too.

Anonymous said...

How do you not have Muse on the list?

Anonymous said...

what the hell... mars volta on 24th???

those guys put it 90 minutes of non-stop music... I think they're maybe one of the three best bands, like, muse and radiohead...

M Sparks said...

I saw Gogol Bordello last Friday. It might have been the best show I've ever seen, and easily in the top 5.

Anonymous said...

well think it could be better, u2 is good but not no.1, flaming lips, white stripes, chili peppers, mars volta are all very good performers along with rush and pearl jam

Anonymous said...

Pearl Jam is hands down the best and didn't even make the list. The whole list must be s**t as far as I'm concerned.

Anonymous said...

Wow, you people should all be sterilized. Pitchfork Media readers should not be allowed to reproduce.

Bands are not ranked on a scale of "one" to "radiohead".

Besides, as anyone who has ever been to their show will tell you, there is no better live show than GWAR. Period, end of discussion. No getting around it.

dave said...

Apparently they have not been to a flogging molly show!

Anonymous said...

where's incubus and linkin park people???

Anonymous said...

try a metal show

Anonymous said...

muse isn't even anywhere here?

Anonymous said...

Glad to see Gogol Bordello and Against Me! on that list. None of these guys have ever Streetlight Manifesto, Flogging Molly or World/Inferno Friendship Society live though. I didn't like U2 when I saw them and Pearl Jam probably tops every band on there. Well, not AM!

Anonymous said...

I'm disappointed TOOL isn't on this list, they are one of the best live acts I have ever seen. Maybe this list should be reconsidered.

Anonymous said...

i must be the 10th person to say this but.... PEARL JAM! Spin magazine is a joke to not list pearl jam. they deserve atleast the top 5. and today they are hands down the best live band now.

Kelvin said...

how could some of the greatest bands of our time miss out on a top ten finish? 3 aussies, 1 band -SILVERCHAIR!!! and what about Tenacious D...that is by far the most entertaining concert ever...nobody can have a crowd laughing at their jokes and then marvelling in their mastery of music in the same instant like TD

Anonymous said...

ok where are the foo fighters they deserve to be on here

AFI? i saw them play at live earth, and i know thats not much of a show, but they shouldn't be in the top 25

and say what you want, but lenny kravitz is a beast onstage
plus wolfmother .. ive never seen them play but i want to, they seem like an amazing live band

Anonymous said...

and how could they forget springsteen and the e street band? 35 years in, theyre still one of the best shows around

Anonymous said...

K im glad to see White Stripes, Turbonegro, and The Hives up there, but My Chemical Romance and Greenday? Honestly im ahuge MCR fan but they aret that good live, and i cant stand greenday ever since i saw them live in 2005. Seriously the might as well have other crappy live bands like Panic at The Disco(whom im also a huge fan of) and Fall Out Boy(whom i cant stand either).I really wish bands that deservea spot on there like Sonata Arctica, Reel Big Fish, and Coheed and Cambria got on.

Anonymous said...

This list is missing Muse, Dropkick Murphy, Tool, Counting Crows, Flogging Molly.. this is just not a good list. Green Day is mediocre at best and what the hell is My Chemical Romance doing here? My Chemical Romance? REALLY? I mean, I saw him twice, each time his voice was flat... I don't get this list at all. Hell, Third Eye Blind is better live than My Chemical Romance. Who the hell are the Riverboat Gamblers?

Anonymous said...

My Morning Jacket deserves to be higher.

Where's Wilco? COME ON!
Where's Ryan Adams?
Where's Pearl Jam...Pearl Jam= consistent great live music for 17 years!!!
Where's Muse (they were voted best live band in Europe).
Where's Keane?

My opinion: Great live bands are more about energy than how close to they sound to their studio album. That energy comes from loving their music. In it mainly for the love of money vs. in it for the love of music. That eliminates probably 98% of all bands...and about 20 of the above bands from this so called "list".

Anonymous said...

this list is crap, there is no pearl jam!!

Patrick said...

I've seen quite a few of those bands perform live and no doubt there are three bands that surely deserve a higher spot: red hot chili peppers (maybe not a higher spot but definitely better than U2), radiohead(#1), the mars volta (top ten material, no doubt - their live shows have even been compared to those of Led Zeppelin by several magazines). This chart is ok, but it needs a bit of work. also - yeah yeah yeahs - not very good t all.

Jeff said...

Just because you've seen a band live doesn't necessarily make them the greatest live show.

SubservientChicken said...

Has the guy who made this not heard of Muse or Something?!!
Theyre the most amazing preformers I have ever seen, Bar possibly Radiohead or U2!!!
