It's been a good while since I last expanded the history portions of your brains. Rightfully so, I'm cramming a few different tidbits of information that all took place on October 3! They're a day late but not an MP3 short - just had a falling out with EZArchive. Sorry!
George Washington Proclaims The First Thanksgiving
Hooray for Mr. Washington! Not only was he an excellent general and first President, but he also nationally recognized Thanksgiving for the first time. The backbone of Thanksgiving stems from the friendly encounter in the Fall of 1621 between Pilgrims and Native Americans. Since being proclaimed in 1789, which was later deemed a National Holiday and moved to the fourth Thursday in November by Lincoln, our obsession with turkey, giant sized balloons of cartoon characters floating around in NYC, and the notion of making over-eating socially acceptable for one day only grow stronger each year. I can't wait.. A little over a month from now and I get to be gluttonous for a day! You know you're stoked.

German Unity Day
Being a student of the Deutsch language, I couldn't help but be interested in this foreign holiday. Although German Unity Day might not mean much to you, it means a lot to the global community. After the Berlin Wall was toppled in November of 1989 communism still faintly lingered in East Germany. With the communist influence in Germany dwindling, Germany finally reunified 16 years ago today. The German Democratic Republic (GDR) ceased to exist, the Iron Curtain was lifted, and East German citizens became part of the European Community reshaping Germany as a country. Es ist gut!

OJ Simpson Found Not Guilty
A little over a decade ago I was nine years old when the "Trial Of The Century" dominated every facet of American media. From the helicopter footage of a white Bronco driving down the interstate to the infamous trying on of the glove, the American public was engulfed in this trial. I was in the third or fourth grade when they announced Simpson being not guilty, an announcement they had the entire class watch. Most of us didn't really understand or care about the trial at that time, but I'll never forget one of the teachers cursing the judicial system under her breath.

Three quirky bits of history on the third day of October with lots of music to boot. Enjoy! I've got a nifty feature coming your way very soon.

What the hell does "I Shot the Sheriff" have to do with O.J.?
You've doing "The Trial of the Century," and yet you discluded the French Kicks?
nice facts. 16 years since Germany was reunited? wow I feel old. I was living there at the time, remember listening on Radio Luxembourg when the wall came down
nifty feature!
i cant wait
Aha, ein Deutsch-Student!!! Dann schreibe ich jetzt deutsch. ;-) Ich lese manchmal dein Musikblog und freue mich oft über deine Uploads. Nettes Zeug, was du da hast...
i, for one, find it interesting that germany used to be called dance dance revolution. thanks, igif! you've expanded my horizons!
ZING!
Iiiih, Ossis.
I actually don't mind East Germans... but their accents just about do my head in.
(Us Northerners generally hate everyone/everything though, so...)
HIstory in music blogs?! I'm impressed. Well done!
The 'decision' in the OJ trial was the point when we here in Europe REALLY began to start laughing at US 'justice'. We haven't stopped laughing yet. OJ and MJ; as guilty as puppies sat next to piles of poo. Ha-ha!
I have a question that is not related to this thread, and since I dont see any other place that's appropriate to post it, I will ask it here:
Why aren't young people in the streets today protesting the Bush administration's policies? I certainly protested against the leadership (Nixon) in my day and I am just curious as to why this generation does not speak up more. Any thoughts?
i know this is late, but i am pleased to announce that germany unification day happened on my very own birthday sixteen years ago =D
hehe.
that's all. nothing too exciting.
