Andrew Bird: "Heretics"

On March 20th, along with highly anticipated releases from Ted Leo/Rx, LCD Soundsystem, and Panda Bear comes a new record from one of my favorite artists (not to mention one of my favorite live performers), Andrew Bird. Armchair Apocrypha, Bird's Fat Possum debut and his third solo release (after dropping off from his Bowl Of Fire project), is shaping up to be another great albeit different album from the violin-savvy indie rocker, containing some of the weirdest ("Simple X") and heaviest ("Fiery Crash") songs he's produced yet. The album's second track, "Imitosis," is a somewhat-unnecessary but still compelling rendition or reworking of "I" from 2003's Weather Systems. To continue the variation, there's a long song ("Armchairs" @ 7:01) and a short song ("The Supine" @ 0:59), and enough sweet melodies and skilled whistling to satisfy every returning AB fan and to hopefully pick up some fresh faces along the way. Here's a song from the album:

[MP3] Andrew Bird - Heretics

UPDATE: We were asked to remove the two versions of "Dark Matter" we had posted, but were allowed to host the equally intriguing "Heretics." Apparently Andrew is upset about the leak and doesn't want the album chopped up and scattered all over the internet (understandable), so if you know someone hosting a song other than "Heretics" please let 'em know. Remember guys: sharing is caring, of course, but so is supporting the artists you love. Check out the links below for more info and MP3s, but also stop by Andrew Bird's merch shop to check out his past releases. Weather Systems and The Mysterious Production Of Eggs are both must-owns if you like what he's doing.

I really like both versions too. I'm particularly fond of the album version at around 2:50.

The intensity of both music and voice on the album version is a really neat contrast to the "simplicity", no Bird is seldom simple, maybe minimalism? of the music on the live version. It's very big...grand.

I think you'll be taking this down soon. Seriosuly, do you ever post anything you don't grab on Oink the night before?

Traffic, Traffic, Traffic

"do you ever post anything you don't grab on Oink the night before?"

no, they don't.

haha i was thinking the same thing. Everytime i see some pretentious indie release on oink i know where to read a dramatic right up about it. Can't wait for the day after arcade fire leaks. hahaa.

oh yeahh anon, my words about this were sooooo dramatic. get a clue dude, we sometimes post leaks not for traffic (we aren't a "struggling blog" looking for hits) but because we know some less tech-savvy readers might like to get a taste before we get the inevitable email from the band's management.

the people who wrote the middle three comments are stupid. everyone posts leaked songs because that's what people want to hear. most of the posts on IGIF that ive read have been about new bands that I haven't heard of, not just leaks of "pretentious indie" artists.

and while we're on the topic, why are indie releases pretentious, anonymous? you probably don't have any justification for that little statement either.

viva IGIF!

I agree with Stacy.

And as a (very) less tech-savvy individual... I thank you guys for the posts.

I have not listened to "Dark Matter" yet - but I really liked "Firey Crash" - pulled off some other blog - I apologize to that blogger for not giving proper credit :(

dear conor,

get over yourself.
dramatic is you middle name.
i eagerly await more arcade fire posts.

dear anon,

i don't know why i'm pandering to your b/s because it's really not worth my time, but I hope you realize how ironic you're being in calling my writing "dramatic" because the act of outing or attempting to label my writing in such a way is pretty dramatic and overwrought to begin with.

Getting back the the album though, it's been hard for me to reimagine the songs that were on Fingerlings. They are good, but it's just one of those cases where you're so used to and comfortable with the other versions.

well, you guys fighting aside, im stoaked about this new stuff! I had never head of the guy untill bonnaroo this summer, and he was one of the best daytime shows of the event.

i totally agree with you tom, but after listening to the album a few times you notice and appreciate the differences more. each version is great in its own way

Heretics is too short-- did it upload right?

Mar. 20 looks exciting. I loved "Mysterious basket of misadventures of missing eggs" or whatever it was called, and now i'm stoked on this!

I know we are done with this, but i just wanted to add that I'm that guy you post the music for.

Thank you.

As for the AB stuff, Heretics is really short. Is that the full song?

Connor, your writing is reliably descriptive and expressive, much moreso than most blogs. I think these people are confusing quality writing for drama (too many eloquent phrasings and cumbersome words). Keep up the good work.

Fuck these haters.

simple x is one of dosh's songs. its on his album pure trash. i guess andrew added lyrics and the change it a little bit. i can honestly say that i enjoy both versions.

I'm torn over your logic stated in the post's update and your logic here in the comments. In the updates you say that you support the artists you love but then here in the comments you basically are out to screw them before their management can react. The band's management is doing the owrk of the band they're not some seperate corporate entity to try to get around or steal from.

and to Stacy - no everyone doesn't post leaked songs, nor does everyone have advertising but if you do want traffic, leaked songs are clearly the way to go since almost all traffic comes through google searches for these very same leaked tracks.

there's a lot more "indie" music to write about besides arcade fire, the shins and modest mouse and while igif does a great job of exploring that music I too would like to see less of the leaks
