There isn't a better way to start off the New Year than with a new Modest Mouse track. I've been relatively calm throughout the (seemingly) months of speculation and hype surrounding the new songs Brock & Co. have been sampling at live shows. Much like my opinion on the "new Radiohead songs" this past summer, it seems backwards for me to judge a song from hearing it live before hearing it in the studio. Normally you'll hear a song on an album and then watch it become either embellished or ruined at a concert, not the other way around. Regardless, I finally have an idea of where Modest Mouse is heading on their new album.
[MP3] Modest Mouse -Dashboard(Removed!)
Isaac Brock is known for the various voices and vocal style he possesses and it seems that he's added yet another to his large collection. The eccentrically jaggered style of music that Modest Mouse are known for is displayed in full form on this track, but not without the touch of Johnny Marr's guitar to smooth out the melodic edges. While a lot of the vocals sound like Isaac is singing underwater due to the radio quality, it's easy to formulate some sort of hypothesis about what their forthcoming album will sound like.
A release date for We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank hasn't been chosen yet - within the range for "early this year".

wow! That's actually really good. Modest Mouse are on my "must-buy" list for this year already, along with Bloc Party, Guns n' Roses, and Radiohead (maybe). Really excellent stuff
Wow, this song sucks.
sounds like a talking heads song to me...perhaps isaac's david byrne's long lost son? -obd
brock has always sounded like byrne to me...i'd put money on him conciously trying to mimic byrne's vocals
I like this song.
Whoever said that it sucked obviously eats wiener and I dont love them for that.
god this is awful. they might as well name the new album sam's town. and wtf is with that synth violin?! who the hell thought synth strings were a good idea?!
isaac wtf. seriously.
The song is awful. It sounds like Maritime. I had to go back and listen to some older songs out of my ears.
completely different to it live...much prefer the live version, I hate the chanty echo by...marr I think. sounds like a joke compared to previous MM stuff.

this has been stuck in my head all day. Damn funky.
i have stupidly high expectations for this album, but i like the sound of this
uuuuuuuuuuugh
I think that Allie said it best.
Ugh.
meh... MM have had their mojo seriously dimished in the couple years. I mean, when a band reaches the point of being covered by Kidz Bop, it's safe to say they've gone to the dark side. This single is further proof.
Yeah, what f-ing decade is this?
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING. I had really hoped that signing with sony wouldn't ruin MoMo in the long-run, but apparently, it has.
I can almost taste Marr's influence. It's like mixing pop-rocks with coke - nothing good will come of it.
all you haters are a bunch of cunts. sure, it's not the beloved old stuff we all wish they would play ad infinitum. they're trying something different. gotta respect em for not going stale. love it or hate, they keep moving. MoMo forever, bitches.
yea, bitches, fuck you all, if you dont like it dont listen. and plus, wtf do you expect them to do, keep bringing out repetitive albums weve all headr b4??????? momo is moving with the times (as it is 2007, not 1993 anymore) i dont think anybody realises that band members, believe it or not, do actually do age with us....the good times pprobably are killing momo, cut them sum slack, since when has any band fueld on drugs ever been 100% consistant, issac still has beautiful lyrics and a complexity nobody can reach. bitches!
This is anything new. This is stuff they've already done before, with less complicated build ups and more frequency to go back to the chorus. His lyrics aren't dark or that deep as they usually are. This is like they looked at a formula page of all their old music and threw it together in an hour. This song is very disappointing as I was hoping they would go towards a more progressive, more ambient sort of sound. Rather, they're Floating On towards pop stardom and I'm not going to be one of the supporters unless the rest of the album sounds better than this, not some Killers cover song or Bloc Party. By the way, to the first comment up there, don't buy the new Bloc Party and especially don't buy the Guns n' Roses, get Radiohead, you asshole idiot.
