Buildings Breeding

California is known for a lot more than meets the eye... and while it may be hard to see through the smog or to look at anything besides really really ridiculously good-looking people, once you get past the glare you'll discover a number of great underground scenes--from hip-hop to surf rock to 70's-style punk--all supporting what made California great before the glitz and glamour: DIY.

Buildings Breeding, an indie rock/pop 4-piece from Davis, CA, originally began as somewhat of a joke. Singer/guitarist/bassist Chris Larsen created "Buildings Breeding" as a joke band on Myspace where he would upload songs he wrote for his girlfriend, Melanie Glover, while she was overseas. When she got back to the west coast, Larsen handed her a tambourine and after she demonstrated a knack for the basic principles of rhythm, he bought her a drum kit. Two more musicians joined the duo and thus began the increasingly full realization of Buildings Breeding...whose work can be sampled below:

[MP3] Buildings Breeding - Stacking Up Reasons

If you can't get over the intentionally f*cked up sound on the opening track of CYHSY's Some Loud Thunder, maybe DIY ain't your thang (unless you don't mind the noise but hate CYHSY's pretentiousness). "Stacking Up Reasons" is entirely a rough recording, sounding almost like a demo than an actual released track, but the catchiness of the melody and the simplistic rhythm make for one great pop song...I've been listening to it all morning.

Buildings Breeding's self-titled debut is out now! Check the links below for more MP3s and to buy the album.

this song is entirely mediocre but i would just like to point out that cyhsy's initial lack of pretentiousness is what attracted bloggers such as yourself to go crazy for them in the first place. their new album IS weak but don't throw around words like pretentious that you as a blogger must reguritate to pretend to have credibility.

oh please, get a clue man

i used the word "pretentious" because I feel Ounsworth's dispassionate vocals and purposeful fucking-up-of-songs is entirely unnecessary. they're trying too hard not to care how their music sounds.. it's not as if they just recorded SLT with crappy equipment, they actually had to edit the track in post to make it sound shitty.

at least with their debut, it felt like they truly didn't care how they sounded (but it was still damn good)...now they're trying to hammer home how little they care, but they're trying oh so freaking hard to come off that way.

please get a clue before you start talking about blogger cred

Don't sweat it, Connor. You'll never satisfy everyone. Especially the anonymous among us.

I liked the CYHSY debut and I think SLT is even better. I guess you could say that the opening track shows pretentiousness. But in my opinion you can only surmise how a band approaches their music. Unless you know them personally I don't really see how you can adequately gage what they are thinking. I actually believe CYHSY care about their music, but thats just my opinion.
