Thursdays and Covers (Special Edition!)

It's Thursday again but this week I'm going to align the covers around the new King of Pop, or at the very least the Prince of Pop - Justin Timberlake.

[MP3] Rock Plaza Central - SexyBack

A friend of my sent me Rock Plaza Central's CD awhile back and I really enjoyed the dark instrumentation contrasting with their Mountain Goat-like vocals, so when I came across their cover of Timberlake's "SexyBack" I raised a suspicious eyebrow to say the least. The greatest part of the entire cover lies within the raw percussion and the unfiltered voice of Eaton's vocals which clearly annunciate every lyric adding an element of humor to the 2006 smash.
[MP3] Lostprophets - Cry Me A River

Sometimes pop should never go punk, case in point with the "Cry Me A River" cover at hand. After the novelty of a Justin Timberlake cover wears off, you'll find yourself listening to a song that lacks in just about every area imaginable. The whining voice and guitar remind me why I can only handle Lostprophets in moderate dosages, despite a mildly intriguing band name. The song starts with promise by kicking it off with a choral lead-in, but ironically ends with a band member muttering "Damn!" at the end. Better luck next cover.
[MP3] Klaxons - My Love

This cover just surfaced recently and almost deserves its very own post. The band's use of simple guitar rhythms, piano melodies, and quick beats are complimented by some terrific vocals. The harmony Klaxons use during the chorus is only preceded in a high pitched rock voice that is so original it seems torn between two genres: rock and hip-hop. The Klaxons seemed to pull everything together seamlessly and manage to leave their own originality imprinted on a smash hit. All they need now is their own T.I. and look out world.

They are all pretty unoriginal covers IMO. There is no real "new take". I like covers of songs like these when you can't tell right away that it is actually a JT song or whoever. Just my opinion. I do agree the 'cry me a river' track is absolute shite.

How 'bout Marit Bergman's cover of My Love? Or James Eric's version of SexyBack?

I love the Klaxons' version of My Love...they've got some other tunes up on their website www.myspace.com/klaxons, as well as their full tour schedule! Oh, and James Eric's SexyBack acoustic rocks!

The Klaxons are considered to be bringing back the “neo rave”, but to me their sound is so eclectic and not to overuse an overused word, but they just sound cool! Once you hear a few of their sounds you will definitely agree that these guys don’t fit into any specific genre of music. The music is fun, and they are not worried about being classified as “pop” which is also ‘cool’ because real pop should be made of GOOD music, they proved to be this ballsy by doing a cover of Justin Timberlake’s “my love,” Its interesting. Can’t wait to see them Coachella 2007!
