Do You Trust Your Stars?

Stars last LP, Set Yourself On Fire, definitely launched the Canadian group into the indie big leagues - so to speak. Their much anticipated follow-up is due out later this Fall, but before wooing the socks of all the musical romantics the band has gone a route similar to Bloc Party. Between Silent Alarm and A Weekend In The City, Bloc Party re-released their debut remixed by a slew of talented artists that turned out remarkably well.

Acting as a musical appetizer to hold over their fans until Fall, Stars prodded a bunch of their friends/peers into revamping their songs for a remixed LP aptly titled Do You Trust Your Friends? - due out May 22. Just who, exactly, are their friends? Final Fantasy, Montag, The Most Serene Republic, Jason Collett, Minotaur Shock, The Dears, Apostle of Hustle, Junior Boys, The Russian Futurists, Metric, Camouflage Nights with Kevin Drew, The Stills and Young Galaxy are all taking turns remixing a song. Here's a taste of Stars' experiment:

[MP3] Stars - Your Ex-Lover Is Dead (Remixed by Final Fantasy) [original]

Like many remixed albums, some of the remixes are sensational while others warrant a smug shrug of the shoulders. It's hard to not go into a remixed album without biases towards your favorite artists, so it should come as no surprise that my favorite remixes come by the hands of Final Fantasy, Metric, and Jason Collett. That's not to shortchange the other remixes, they're all fantastic and some have changed the songs so much that it should be their own work featuring Stars! Final Fantasy composes entirely new music and only uses the vocal tracks from "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" to create a haunting remix featuring his musings on strings and keys.

I didn't really like this album, but I think I need to give it more time because I'm so used to SYOF that hearing songs that sounded different just put me off a little, I hope it grows on me.
