We love magic--always have. And you know we love Arms. So in a similar fashion one would expect us to love a combination of the two words...and we do! Thanks go out to Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste and his always-informative, always-a-good-read blog for shedding light on Manchester, UK's Magic Arm.
Magic Arm is principly the work of one man--Marc Rigelsford--who manages to flesh out his psych-folk songs with immense amounts of overdubbing and Grizzly Bear-like, breathy vocal layers (makes sense why Ed would like this song...he also recommended Sleeping States, who uses similar techniques). Magic Arm recently put out an EP, Outdoor Games, featuring seven beautiful tracks including a solo cover of LCD Soundsystem's "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House." Here's the EP's title track:
[MP3] Magic Arm - Outdoor Games (highest recommendation)
This is by far one of the most brilliantly dense and carefully imagined songs I've heard in quite some time. Starting with a simple finger plucking pattern, Rigelsford's vocals take this ship to new heights, bobbing up and down on a rising sea of contemplative organ and harmonica. Rigelsford begs us for empathy in the song's epic closing moments, "Do you have the will to end?" I couldn't have said it better than STG: "Why make that dare? Why ask people to answer that? Unless it doesn't mean what it might. Unless it's not 'Do you have the will to end [it]?' and instead, friends, 'Do you have the will to [make it to the] end?'"
