NEW: Spoon: "Don't Make Me A Target"

Spoon's Gimme Fiction was one of my favorite releases of 2005 so naturally their 2007 follow-up Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is one of my most anticipated. Thanks to sixeyes' post yesterday I got a taste of the album earlier than expected. That song, "The Ghost Of You Lingers," is certainly one of the strangest songs Britt Daniel and co. have ever created, a dark and compelling oddity from a band that typically produces pop songs that are much easier on the ears.

I wondered if Spoon had taken a new route on the new album, but after listening to the new disc today I can safely say that while the band definitely tosses a few curveballs at us, most of the gems on Ga x 5 are fundamentally Spoon songs...and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Here's the album's instant-hit opener:

[MP3] Spoon - Don't Make Me A Target (link goes to Hype!)

Spoon fans will most likely recognize the similarity to "The Way We Get By": the descending blues scale, Daniel's soulful vocals, the unruly piano and guitar. Britt Daniel could be referring to any number of personal invasions when he cries "Don't make me a target!"--talking about "The man from the stars" who comes from "...a parking lot town where nothing lives in the sun." Major label pressures? Uncertainty of death and/or longevity? Whatever, he could be singing about Lindsay Lohan's vagina for all I care, it doesn't even matter when a song rocks as hard as this one. But just for shi'giggles, leave your interpretations in the comments if you'd like.

Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (apparently titled that way because it's the sound of the first song recorded for the album, "The Ghost Of You Lingers") arrives on Merge on July 10th.

Previously: Britt Daniel covers Sam Cooke

hey guys...we've been trying to reach you via IM, but can you take down that track? It's a little early to be having a free-for-all with the record. Merge and the band would appreciate it. Thanks!
