White Rabbits: "Kid On My Shoulders"

Brooklyn's White Rabbits might be this year's surprise hit for the two of us here at IGIF, much like last year's debut of Annuals spectacular Be He Me which made it to #4 on our Best Albums of 2006. Fort Nightly, which was released just six days ago, is one of the most pleasing and ecclectic albums of the year thus far, the result of an exceedingly talented six-member collective sporting two singers, two drummers, two guitarists, as well as alternating bass and piano thrashing.

White Rabbits' music is like a mystery box (one that you might choose instead of a visible prize, like Peter Griffin choosing the mystery box instead of a boat in one memorable episode of Family Guy), containing exorbitant amounts of layers, sounds, and harmonies--except everything that flows out of it emanates in such a way that not even the most rigid and tight-assed of obsessive-compulsives could keep it straight. The mastery of White Rabbits can be heard in the opening track from their debut album:

GH mentioned how you might learn everything you need to know about White Rabbits by listening to the last two minutes of this song, during which a once-enjambed beat+melody concoction morphs into an infinitely-identifiable, almost universal war-cry: "We held our tongues throughout it / One day we'll laugh about it." This is indie rock at its most dynamic: a constantly flowing, shape-shifting, and, of course, rocking sound produced by a band that's not afraid to prove to the pessimists that there's still plenty of wiggle-room in modern music.
