Today's Releases [6/19/07]

Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army

And I thought it couldn't get any more grandiose than Neon Bible! The 'Spree dive into huge anthemic, choral pop headfirst on this album--a result that's occasionally breathtaking but one that can feel forced at times. Some of the songs bleed into each other by the end, but if you don't think that'll bother you, please pick up this record. It's feel-fucking-fantastic music, if nothing else.

The White Stripes - Icky Thump

On their sixth studio album, the maniacal White Stripes return to their roots with the most electrifying album of their career--certainly their best release since De Stijl. The riffs are infectious, the lyrics are at their wittiest, each song brings its own dish to the table, and it finally appears Jack & Meg are content taking a few steps back, so to speak.. What more could we ask for?

Chromeo - Fancy Footwork

Chromeo's Fancy Footwork is the funkiest thing since bad shellfish...in a good way. If you can't get enough of the eighties but don't want to admit it to your friends, grab this LP so you can get your funk on without feeling like a turd. Even the fact that the album's "Intro" track uses a tune from The Wizard Of Oz is enough to make this album one of the coolest of the year.

The Ghost Is Dancing - The Darkest Spark

Arriving on the heels of their wonderful debut self-titled EP, The Ghost Is Dancing's new album The Darkest Spark is a continuation of those ideas and musical principles: loud, joyous indie rock akin to Broken Social Scene and Q And Not U. There's a good chance you haven't heard of this band, so please check out the following track which also happens to be the closing track on The Darkest Spark.

Ashtray Heart is probably the most random cover the Stripes have picked yet. Captain Beefheart seems a little out of their element, but it sounds amazing.

Nice to see Americans catching onto The Ghost Is Dancing! They're a great band, and a bunch of really nice people, so hopefully they'll catch on.

White Stripes are sweetness. Some of the songs are really interesting. The trumpet on "conquest" is kinda weird, but I love the gritty, all-out garage/blues sound they have. It's great to go back to good ol' Stripes, no matter how good Raconteurs was

you really should give more attention to Art Brut. THey are probably the best band coming out of britain now

I don't know how the White Stripes tune could be worse! But The Ghost is Dancing is a real find. Thx.
