Rare Elliott Smith Vid Surfaces, Unreleased Song Out Soon

Thanks to Sweet Adeline for pointing this out. The above video clip features Elliott along with members of Quasi and former members of Elliott's pre-solo band Heatmiser on the road during the XO tour in 1999. Here we're given a somewhat unusual glimpse into Smith's happier days, touring in support of his major label debut with ex-husband and wife duo Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss of Quasi as his backing band.

Elliott fans will get another surprise later this November when Volume 2 of the Live From Nowhere Near You charity compilation is released. The comp will feature a never before released (and never before leaked, never played live, never heard by anyone, you get the idea) song of Elliott's uncovered by longtime friend and archivist of Elliott's estate Larry Crane while digging through some of Elliott's session tapes. Here's what Kevin Moyer, who was present during the uncovering, had to say about the song:

"Back in February I had the pleasure of sitting in with Larry Crane at the Jackpot Studios as he archived Elliott material and mixed the upcoming New Moon album, and we searched for a track to be included on this special charity effort. We stumbled upon something that his family, myself, and the labels didn't even know that it existed until it was dredged out of his wall of reels. It was a one take masterpiece, dating around the time of the Heatmiser house recordings, in preparation of Either/Or or a Heatmiser album perhaps... recorded completely, and then forgotten. Elliott plays every instrument on the track, and of course the vocals. This [upcoming] track has elements of everything that I love [about Smith's music] all rolled up into one - slow, fast, happy, sad. I really think that you will dig it."

Awesome. Now when will the Smith/Brion sessions be unearthed? Or Elliott's cover of "Hey Jude" for the Royal Tenenbaums soundtrack? I guess beggars can't be choosers.

Also, diehard Smith fans will know that the "Needle In The Hay" 7" has been out of print for quite a long time. Thanks to Kill Rock Stars for deciding to reprint and rerelease that single, which includes the b-side "Some (Rock) Song" as well as "Alphabet Town." You can buy the single here. I'll go ahead and use this post as an excuse to host a few Smith rarities:
[MP3] Elliott Smith - Stained Glass Eyes
[MP3] Elliott Smith - I Didn't Understand (Alternate Version)
[MP3] Elliott Smith - No Life
[MP3] Elliott Smith - Happiness (Alt. Acoustic Version)
