Stars: "The Night Starts Here"

First the massively remixed Set Yourself On Fire and now the first single from a new LP. Moving at a pace that would make even the most forward prostitute jealous, the Canadian group is wasting no time letting folks get an earful of their latest work. The title of their upcoming Fall release, In Our Bedroom After The War, first invoked cherished images of Lennon's brilliantly stunted 'Bed Peace' - but this album is probably geared more towards our ears than political ideals.

I've had more than a few days to let their new single play in iTunes and my head - attempting to delay posting on it until I get a solid opinion of the song. The reason for waiting so long? The Stars' have produced some stellar pop gems from past albums so I hold them to higher expectations with each subsequent release. So far, so good - they're taking my expectations and milking great melodies out of them.

[MP3] Stars - The Night Starts Here

The first thing that is immediately recognizable and great about this song lies within it's natural feeling. I don't know of another pop/rock outfit that is better at maintaining their sound (a winning combination) yet still progressing to the listener's enjoyment. This song feels like a natural extension of Set Yourself On Fire but utilizes the effect of a muffled guitar that intermittently fills the background with romantic distortion, which I didn't know was even possible. Amy and Torq have an undeniable feeling of ying & yang when they sing - they're no John and Paul - but hey, the songs they've been creating have outlasted the effects of a "current thing" and progressed to a steady and welcomed sound.

I fell in love with this song just a few days ago -- I'd downloaded it and posted it and was cool with it, but then a few nights ago I was walking out of my gym, which overlooks a stunning view of the city lights and Pikes Peak, came out into the perfect amazing summer night air. It was sunset and there was a slight breeze -- right as this track popped up on random. It was perfect.
