Tom Jones: "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor"

Shortly before the star-studded Princess Diana tribute concert kicked off yesterday, Sir Tom Jones spoke about his desire to play an Arctic Monkey's cover. The second song into his short set he unveiled his Arctic Monkeys rendition - a track that Jones would like to release as a single later this year. Check out the cover - it's a really great version and having Joe Perry on guest-guitar doesn't hurt.

[MP3] Tom Jones - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor (Live @ Wembley Stadium)

Who would've thought that a dark voice and big band sound could take the UK's hottest music act and transform it into a tune that sounds Jonesque from the get go? The music all matches up perfectly, although you have to admit that it's peculiar to hear Jones croon out some of the lyrics like "Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984!" Either way, you've got to give Jones massive credit for keeping his thumb and ear on the pulse of the music scene - even appreciating the younger talents and paying them musical homage. It's easy to see why musicians like Bowie and Jones can command loads of respect from "new generations" - especially since they're both actively involved within them.

I agree. Thought Tom's cover of this song was one of the highlights of the concert. Liked it better than the original. Look forward to it's release ..

oh no! I thought it was awful! Tom sounded fairly uncomfortable at some points and it just didn't work for me.

not nearly as good as the bit where he introduced Miss "Josh" Stone...

This song is actually going to be on an album he's doing. Heard the final version, pretty catchy. I think the album is all covers like this one.

I was hoping William Shatner would be the first to get his hands on I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor. But okay, I'll take this for now.
