Thursdays and Covers

[MP3] Bono - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

Who would've thought that Bono would cover a Beatles tune? Well, when you think about the people that Bono is trying to emulate, you can't help but see him drawing influence from John Lennon. Perhaps it's their Irish heritages, or Bono is like many others in his adoration of The Beatles. This cover is slated to appear on the soundtrack to the upcoming flick, Across The Universe. Bono's take on the song is solid; the instruments all playing to precision, great vocal effects, and a string laden ending all working together to pay homage to an incredible song.

[MP3] Lil Wayne - Help

Lil Wayne was on to something when he declared that he was "the best rapper alive", the guy has some serious talent. He's been on a pace of putting out a mixtape every three months, each one packed with fresh tracks that don't have the tendency to put Lil Wayne in an artist confinement labeled "too much, too fast". Taking a Beatles sample and making a candid request for 'help!' via hard-hitting lines and a great beat, all sounds too agreeable when delivered so smoothly by Wayne.

[MP3] Citizen Cope - Karma Police (Live)

Citizen Cope is a great entertainer - all of his live shows that I've caught have been more than satisfying. Unfortunately I never got the chance to see his organ driven rendition of "Karma Police", a cover mixing reggae and gospel tones that make you feel like you're sitting in a beachside pew with frozen drink in your hand. Without Yorke's haunting vocals to accentuate the song, it takes on an entirely new mood that makes it worth trying something different.

Just FYI, Across the Universe is not upcoming, it's already out. (To mixed reviews).

And re: "Who would've thought that Bono would cover a Beatles tune?"

I'm not sure if you're kidding or not, but U2 has covered the Beatles and Lennon more than a few times, both in studio and in concert.

There's no way I'm listening to anything from "Lil Wayne", no matter how much talent he has.

I'm surprised that you have such positive comments about Citizen Cope's live shows. I saw him at Sasquatch this year, and he seemed bored and it was clear that he didn't want to be there. I was really disappointed with his performance.

Bono is actually pretty funny in the film as well. And this coming from someone who doesn't much care for U2 at all.

anonymous beat me to it. but specifically, one of the worst covers of Helter Skelter is U2's version on Rattle And Hum.

In accross the universe, Bono also covers 'i am the walrus' in a 'falling down the rabbit hole' kind of a scene. it's pretty good.
