In a bizarre twist of fate, Kanye West's mother died from complications after surgery yesterday. I feel pretty bad for Kanye because nearly everyone that's listened to him for more than two minutes knows he has a very close relationship with his mother. Dying from complications after she had cosmetic surgery is somberly ironic, seeing how the surgery itself was (probably) superfluous. As much swagger as he walks with, one can only imagine the "back to Earth" effect it may have on Kanye.
[MP3] Kanye West - Hey Mama
I'm beginning to think that Tim Burton's obsession with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter is pushing the fetish envelope. Of course, it's hard to imagine any other duo of actors representing Burton's dark tales as effectively as they have. If you've seen trailers for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and/or love Burton films, you're undoubtedly excited about this flick. One critic referred to it as "the best Burton flick since Ed Wood - possibly superior". Burton was adamant that the adapted musical accentuate the bloody and violent acts Sweeney Todd commits, believing if it lacked bloodshed then the film would be robbed of its power. To give you an idea of the kind of gore Burton wants, the producer of the film stated, "Burton had a very clear plan that he wanted to lift that up into a surreal, almost Kill Bill kind of stylization. We had done tests and experiments with the neck slashing, with the blood popping out. I remember saying to Tim, ‘My god, do we dare do this?'" Until Johnny starts singing and slashing, check out the trailer:
Last but not least (and completely unrelated to anything having to do with music), Krist over at Thepunkguy.com came across a strange photo nestled amongst general files at his previous place of employment. Before the debauchery his name

Your observation on the loss of Kanye West's mom...was well written.
Plus...I was out of the loop and hadn't heard about this.
Thank you on both counts.
Great blog!
Plastic surgery complications? Vanity...death be thy name. So sad and more than likely not necessary. Thanks for the info, in another excellent (yet somber) post.
I had no idea that Sweeny Todd was going to be a musical. It will be interesting to see how Depp and Burton pull this off. I've seen the movie posters but haven't seen any trailers yet, thanks.
i'm going to have to disagree with the above commenters completely.
i'm a fan of this blog. i read it nearly every day, but i feel compelled to say that i felt you're comments about the death of kayne's mom to be highly inappropriate.
i'm referring to this specifically: "As much swagger as he walks with, one can only imagine the 'back to Earth' effect it may have on Kanye."
back to earth? he's a hip-hop artist, why does it matter to you? and i think it also goes without saying that the loss of a parent with whom one is so close with would bring anyone "back to Earth".
What a weird trailer. And - is it just me, or does Sweeney Todd seem like a musical version of the Count of Monte Cristo? I remember seeing Sweeney Todd performed by my high school's drama club (haha), but never noticed the similarities til now. It also definitely didn't seem as "dark" when performed by high schoolers... silly, actually.
