Jill Barber: "Hard Line"

Nova Scotia!! Jump on it! Jump on it!? Although Sir Mix-A-Lot, and mix a lot he does folks, doesn't show the love that he should for Nova Scotia, I'm going to attempt evening the balance (somewhat) by introducing you to up-and-coming Jill Barber. She hails from Halifax, soothes with a voice that can croon and bounce, and backs her great lyricism with music that'll seamlessly transport you between chorus and verse without a flaw.

Her last album, 2006's For All Time, has been a debut LP best compared to a lava lamp; the light's been heating up for quite some time and people are slowly starting to notice the spectacle happening from within. Barber has been garnering praise and fans alike with each song she performs, recently picking up a nod from Canada's Folk Music Awards for Best Singer-Contemporary and winning the East Coast Music Awards' Artist of the Year and Recording of the Year for the gem "Hard Line".

[MP3] Jill Barber - Hard Line

This song rolls the finest ingredients of country, folk, and jazz into one delicious, nutritious aural burrito that you'll have a hard time resisting. Starting with a rhythmic bass line and contagious snapping, the song makes charming progression that can mainly be attributed to solid songwriting. Her voice, perhaps best compared to a mix of Joni Mitchell and Neko Case, burst with the sexy originality and clever confidence that makes it easy to seperate her from the vast sea of overproduced female artists. For All Time will continue to foment positive buzz but I'd look towards the horizon - keep your eye out for a follow-up that will push the envelope enough for everyone to peek inside.

Wow, great to see some Nova Scotia love. Herohill is based out of Halifax, NS, so it's fantastic to see people picking up on our talent.

If you need another dose, Jill just put out a non-profit xmas disc:: http://www.herohill.com/2007/11/reviews-jill-barber-rose-cousins.htm

So many great folk bands coming out of Halifax these days. Jenn Grant, Ghost Bees, Meaghan Smith...

Jenn Grant wins my vote for the next Feist.
