Arcade Fire Remix Competition Underway

Before I begin, yes that's the most attractive picture of Regine I could find. I know! I was surprised too.

The good Arcade Fire-lovin' folks over at Us Kids Know have put on a little remix competition for "Black Mirror" -- likely because the video for the song came with 6 separate audio tracks. Of course this means any fanboy with a Mac Book can whip up a terrible GarageBand remix (I've listened to plenty of them, trust me...blech) but there are a few that caught my attention. Here are the best and the rest (so far and according to me, not officially):

The Best:

[MP3] Arcade Fire - Black Mirror (Trading Aces Remix)

This is how to do a remix. You don't just add a few synth effects and a few extra ticks to the original song. You rip the thing apart into a million pieces and then put it all meticulously back together into one insane clusterfuck of 8-bit handclaps, atari-like melodies, and cascading electronic swaths, all with an entirely new time signature. And you HOPE that the track reaches the epic climax at the end that the original so magnificently achieved. This isn't perfect (around 1:15 could be done a little better) but it's the best Black Mirror remix I've heard, and it's my pick to win the contest if the judges have any clue what they're doing.
[MP3] Arcade Fire - Black Mirror (Andrew Maury Remix)

This one is a little more simple than the one above, but what it lacks in complexity it makes up in drive. This is a seriously heavy, club-hittin' remix, and if that's your thing (or more your thing than the Trading Aces remix), you'll really dig this.

The Rest:
[MP3] Arcade Fire - Black Mirror (Full-Source Remix) *
[MP3] Arcade Fire - Black Mirror (Rafroel Remix) *
[MP3] Arcade Fire - Black Mirror (Joel Mix)
[MP3] Arcade Fire - Black Mirror (WTF Remix)

* - These are alright, much better than the two below them.

Hah! All this and I just stole the drums and ripped them apart as backing for my guitar on a song. It's so hard to find good, not-terrible drum loops. . .

I was going to do a flamenca version but wisely chickened out.

hmmmmmm... i fail to see why the trading aces remix is a favorite. the drum sounds are cheesy as crap... like the standard drum kit on a cheap casio keyboard. and at 1:15.... holy moly. uhhh is there any key signature present? its dissonant to the point of laughter. i'm not really sure if the remixer knows what they're doing, musically, here... but if you like it, you like it!

sonically, the andrew maury remix is so much cleaner and properly mixed. i dig that. his sequencing is very complex too, much more than trading aces. i like it because it sticks to the song, but puts a whole new spin on its style. kudos.

I personally like both mixes, yet I think the trading aces version is more catchy. The major difference that I noticed was that the Aces mix took the song in a completely different direction and made it have a completely different style and tone, which is much harder to do than play it safe.

"this is how to do a remix" - u must be joking that, trading aces remix is shambolic. chris is right about the drums, and b4 u say he meant to use those sounds, he may have but it just doesnt fit. the synths are blatently presets. cheese all round.

listen to some alex metric. thats how you do a remix
