[MP3] Grand Archives: "Torn Blue Foam Couch" + 2007 Demos

If you were wondering where much of the influence went that made Band of Horses' 2006 debut so much better (in my opinion) than last year's follow-up, look no further than Seattle's Grand Archives. Mat Brooke left BoH last year, always feeling that it was much more the project of their singer Ben Bridwell than it was his own, and instead started a band called previously just called "Archives." After releasing a couple of head-turning demos (see below), Grand Archives laid down a solid list of tracks for their self-titled debut, which comes out on Sub Pop on February 19th. The following track, veritable band/album-christener "Torn Blue Foam Couch," is the perfect introduction to this band:

[MP3] Grand Archives - Torn Blue Foam Couch

This is one that'll get stuck in your head pretty quickly, due in part by Brooke's remorseful yet vibrant vocals and breezy melodies. It's got a very understated anthemic quality to it--perfect for the start of one of this year's better Spring releases.

For a look into the band's past and where the songs on their debut came from (musically & evolutionarily speaking), check out these demos which were first posted by Forkcast in April 2007:
