"I am this great, unstable mass of blood and foam / And no one in her right mind would make my home my home"
The Mountain Goats talent and success extend far beyond the cult following they've established since their brilliant lo-fi days. Frontman John Darnielle has long since outgrown the archaic cassette recordings that became early trademarks of his career, recording studio albums that no longer use the corner of a bedroom as the studio. Through all of the technological advancements since Darnielle started recording in 1991, The Mountain Goats' music somehow remained as this quirky, untouched utopia of lo-fi folk rock. Although 2002's All Hail West Texas marked the end of Darnielle's home-recording brilliance, his growth as a songwriter and lyricist continue to impress with each subsequent release.
The Mountain Goats latest LP, Heretic Pride, hits shelves in a couple of weeks and comes loaded with 13 reasons why Darnielle is one of the better songwriters in the business. Those awaiting shouldn't be disappointed, here's a new track that became an instant favorite of mine.
[MP3] The Mountain Goats - Autoclave
Start with a simple riff, simple beat, faint keys, sporadic strings, fantastic lyrics, and an ability to hook listeners into a story better than Garrison Keillor and then, and only then, you'd be close to fulfilling the successful Mountain Goats formula. The formula you can't replicate, however, is that of John Darnielle's creative inspiration. Darnielle claims that he was in Alaska when he read about a life-form that can not only survive an autoclave (a device used for heating substances above their boiling point; used to manufacture chemicals or to sterilize surgical instruments) but seemed to enjoy the whole ordeal - at temperatures fatal to all other life-forms, this bacteria began to breed. Darnielle exclaimed, "Naturally, this got me to thinking about people whose hearts involuntarily pulverize any good feelings that come within a city block of them." Thank you bizarre thought pattern, you've birthed another gem.

Hey, just fyi, I found a lot of awesome artists at woozyfly.com. It's a new site, still BETA, that really seems to be the next generation in connecting fans with bands. There's so much stuff to listen to.
There are a lot of applications for musicians too, if that's your thing. It gives you access to digital music promotion and distribution. You can upload videos, photos, and music. You can even create your own TV show and check out other bands!
I think the two bands they're promoting this week are heavy vee and end ever after. You should all totally check out the site.
This is a really well mastered recording. Thanks for the new stuff.
I love The Mountain Goats, and I can't wait for the new album. I finally saw them for the first time last November (ON my 25th birthday, no less), and I was so blown away. I will NEVER, under any circumstances, miss any more of their shows.
Thanks for the track.
