Thursdays and Covers

The last time I threw up multiple cover versions of the same song and polled everyone on their personal favorites it seemed to be an enjoyable, interactive hit. This time around we'll spice things up a bit by gauging the public opinion on The Beatles "Come Together". The song, as some of you Beatlemaniacs know, was originally written by John Lennon for Timothy Leary's 1970 California gubernatorial campaign against Ronald Reagan. Leary, using the campaign slogan "Come together, join the party", joined John & Yoko at their famous Montreal bed-in where Lennon constructed him a campaign song. Of course Leary's arrest on marijuana possession ended his campaign and Lennon reformatted the song to the well-known version existing today. Below are a handful of "Come Together" covers, some of which you may know and some you may not (look out for a sweet vocal bass line from McFerrin and solid vocals from comedian Robin Williams), that offer up some different twists on the Lennon classic. Either way, you're in charge of passing judgement on your favorite!

[MP3] Joe Cocker - Come Together
[MP3] Axl Rose & Bruce Springsteen - Come Together (Live)
[MP3] Tom Jones - Come Together (Live)
[MP3] Ike & Tina Turner - Come Together
[MP3] Michael Jackson - Come Together
[MP3] Soundgarden - Come Together
[MP3] Robin Williams & Bobby McFerrin - Come Together

I like the cover of the song that Prince just did at Coachella.

didn't know robin williams could sing. also, wasn't the song recorded by the beatles in 1969? doesn't seem like the timelines add up for timothy leary. just curious.

I'd recommend taking a listen to Carbon Leaf's cover of the song, and Grace Potter & The Nocturnal's cover. I can upload them for you if you guys want.

where is the vote for "fuck you tools and your lame ass covers feature that no one gives a fuck about"? I'd bet most people would vote on that one.

@anonymous: You're right about the timelines seeming strange, but the bed-in with Leary happened in June 1969 and the Beatles recorded "Come Together" the next month. You can hear Lennon at the bed-in doing an improvised song "Get It Together" that has also has the phrase "come together" in it. Lennon said that he tried to write a campaign song, but could only come up with the unsuitable "Come Together," so he kept it instead for the Beatles.

The Robin Williams one is cool, but Joe Cocker takes the cake IMO. :)

various aspects...

best performance by far is the version from Tom Jones. It is played live, it is tight and funky with an very cool Fender Rhodes. I love this track. It was released on the "Burning Down The House" EP years ago...

The Robin Williams and Bobby McFerrin version sounds great. I like this one too!
