There is something about combining an echoing guitar, raw vocals, and deep percussion that D.C.'s The Walkmen do correctly. Their music is like making batches of chocolate chip cookies, rather simple to concoct but damn hard to perfect. Although I can usually only handle a few Walkmen tracks at a time, their latest LP You & Me (out Aug. 19th) is a record that I have no problem playing straight through. The album really accentuates their own sound and the unique personality they perform with; one might say what Kings Of Leon are to southern rock, The Walkmen are to northern rock. There is a middle chunk of the record that contains four tracks of similar length (4:04, 4:02, 4:05, 4:02) and style that'll push your ears over the hump - check out one of those tracks ("Canadian Girl") below. The coolest part? You don't have to wait until the 19th to buy the latest Walkmen wonder - you can download the entire album now for just $5 over at Amie Street where all proceeds benefit the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Get good tunes cheap, early, and at the benefit of others - nice!
