The National debuted a new song called "A Thousand Black Cities" to a packed house last night in Copenhagen, Denmark. Thanks to reader Bryant Heath for not only recording the performance and uploading it to YouTube, but also for sharing it exclusively with IGIF.
Fresh off the heels of the overwhelming Boxer LP, not to mention the underwhelming Virginia EP, it sounds as if Berninger and company are slowly working their way towards an as of yet undiscovered sound, demonstrated clearly by the sparse instrumentation and choral repetition in the above video. Consider this a work-in-progress from a band that rarely produces anything unworthy of their most rabid fans' ears. Give it a few months and "A Thousand Black Cities" could be the gorgeous new single we're all waiting for.

From one of those rabid fans: thank you! I look forward to seeing what this mutates into.
promising indeed - I'm going to their show in Ã…rhus, Denmark tonight. I am, obviously, quite excited.
Thanks for bringing the video to my attention.
Many thanks for the post.
exclusively shared??? stereogum had this posted a year before you guys. the ego on you is incredible.
would you please stop posting lies as fact on our comment section.
stereogum posted this a day after we did and linked The Music Slut, who posted it that morning. Music Slut didn't link anyone, but since the video had 3 views before we were told about it, we can only imagine they picked it up from us or someone else who got it from us.
if common sense is inherent to big egos, then we're all guilty except you and perhaps the music slut.
calling the virginia EP underwhelming is unfair. it's a collection of unreleased songs (ie. weren't deemed good enough to make the final cut for boxer), and a cover, and some live tracks. i think that for cutting room floor demos, the songs are GREAT. especially as a peek into the making of boxer.
