[Hypeworthy] Snob Scrilla is... Hip-Hop's Rookie of the Year?

Making hyperbolic claims on the strength of one EP with five original songs and two remixes might seem like a stretch for most acts... Usually when an band is hyped after one EP (or shit, one song, even), you can almost hear the band members' jaws dropping, their brains squeezing out "oh shit" thoughts as they try to figure out what to do next. It didn't work out too well for Black Kids, and it remains to be seen with Passion Pit (though I have my doubts)... but if I had to place my bets early, I'd throw everything I've got on Snob Scrilla-- if he isn't on every blog, music television channel, oldskool mixtape, Urban Outfitters PA system, hipster iPod, and Best Albums list by the end of 2008, he'll be there in 2009.

If that sounds like an impossible expectation, take a look at Scrilla's hometown success. Moving to Australia from the SF Bay Area in 2003 at the age of 19, emcee Sean Ray took on the stage name Snob Scrilla as he tore up club after club, opening for Jurassic 5 and De La Soul. In the next five years Scrilla crafted his sound, a combination of fast beats, unusual lyrics, 80s whiplash synth, and an an oldschool flow with a newschool attitude, a rap amalgam that would make Andre 3000 very, very proud. A break-out single, the very N.E.R.D.-like "There You Go Again," launched him into the national spotlight, getting tons and tons of play on Triple J radio.

Snob Scrilla's debut EP was released in Australia in July, along with a sick music video for "There You Go Again." You can listen to most of the songs from the EP on his myspace, including "Mr. Officer" featuring Gorillaz emcee Del The Funky Homosapien.

Here are "Chasing Ghosts" and "Mr. Officer" -- prolly the hottest tracks on the EP:

Go ahead, leave me some love... you know you want to :-)

this is pretty terrible, cookie cutter stuff. when did the title rookie of the year ever apply to hip hop and why does it excuse them when they lack innovation?

Yeah this is pretty standard stuff. 'Chasing Ghost' sounds like it's trying really hard to be a Gnarls/Outkast track. 'Mr. Officer' is a little better, but still sounds a bit gimmicky and the whole 'narrative rap song' hit it's peak with the Fresh Prince theme song. Definitely not hype worthy.

i don't know about the ppl above, but i love this. so wat if it sounds a lil like outkast and gnarls, those are two awesome bands. no one criticizes arcade fire for sounding too much like talking heads or U2.

everyone has influences. and either way, this shit it radio GOLD.

good find IGIF

just heard it and totally agree, these tracks are mad, and the production is amazing. ol' skool flava with a modern edge. cant wait for the album.

No idea what the above comments are on about...Snob Scrilla is far superior to 95% of the shitty hip hop you hear these days. I've been turned off by hip hop over the past 10 years, because most of it is crap, but I'd listen to this!
