[Video] Passion Pit: "Sleepyhead" + MP3

Despite our friend Derek's (formerly of Good Weather For Airstrikes) appeals for our support of Cambridge, MA's Passion Pit (he breathlessly described them as "the best new band of the last whatever and the authors of the best album of 2009"), I wasn't too wowed by the Chunk of Change EP, with the notable exception of PP's breakout single "Sleepyhead."

Everyone has and will continue to compare Passion Pit to MGMT (a comparison that initially dissuaded me from investigating PP further), but where MGMT combines what is essentially catchy, optimistic emo (let's face it) with an "artsy" and "progressive" mantra, Passion Pit brings the same infectious bells and whistles without all the pretense. No whining, no pandering to wayward and impressionable emotions... no overwrought passion (which in this case is a good thing). Just brilliantly catchy synthonics that sneak into the back of your mind without a message beating you over the head.

That's sure to anger some MGMT fans, but probably just the ones who for whatever reason failed to latch onto Arcade Fire in 2004. Regardless, this is a post about the video for "Sleepyhead" which you can watch below.

jesus, you are a terrible music critic. expand your palette beyond the cover of SPIN. the EP was made as a gift for his girlfriend, never meant to be the most incredible debut ever. put it into context. it's incredible for what it is. and a MGMT comparison? that band doesn't hold shit to the fairly innovative looping techniques and productions he's packed into this tiny under three minute gem. they will undoubtedly be overhyped, but that doesn't mean this guy has no talent (unlike say, MGMT). you finally post great music on here, just to say it's an arcade fire rip off? keep proving that you have no place in the blogosphere, or in popular opinion.

anon you might want to read the post again. The MGMT comparison was to point out MGMT's flaws and Passion Pit's strengths, not the other way around.

and the arcade fire comparison? that was about MGMT's borrowing and exploiting AF's messages into bite-sized accessible chunks for a mass audience.... nothing about Passion Pit there.

Arcade fire is a talented band for what they are, so is mgmt, and also very talented are the guys in passion pit. no need to critisize any of them, either you like them for exactly what they are or you dont.
