[MP3] Ruby Isle - Skinny Love
Since this is the first edition of covers in 2009, what better way to start it off then by showcasing some Ruby Isle covers of two cherished tracks from 2008? Well Ruby Isle, for better or for worse, have taken Fleet Foxes' "White Winter Hymnal" and Bon Iver's "Skinny Love" and made them completely their own. If you were ever curious as to what really great, melodically satisfying songs sound like when played/remixed in a European disco.. this would probably be eerily close to what the techno twins, Slvad and Dieter, would spin in Brussels.
[MP3] Mates of State - California
If all marriages were as blissful and musical as Mates of State's matrimony, everyone would be expected to create an album on their honeymoon and headline a tour by their first year anniversary. Mates of State have been married for some time now and have put out good album after good album that chime and pop with chemistry. Now they can add some new chemistry to their live shows since they'll be embarking on a US tour with Black Kids. Should make for an interesting show; energetic.. to say the least.
[MP3] Florence and the Machine - Postcards From Italy
If there is a voice and femme fatale sound to be on the watch for this year, Florence and the Machine would have to take my anticipation cake. She's got smooth vocals and a charming/creative British rock sound that reminds me of Feist coping with a bad mood by wailing on a distorted guitar. With this sweetly raw Beirut cover and news that she dropped Johnny Borrell from her upcoming album, I'll be staying within earshot of Florence this year.

I can't stand that Beirut cover. her voice kills one of my favourite songs ever. I don't think anyone should ever cover Beirut, they will never measure up
the beirut cover is pathetic..
there are better things on youtube, cmon dont let someone desecrate this song and then promote it on your blog cause she has a voice that sounds like every other wanna be bluesy singer from the current indie rock scene and 90's pop music.
the ruby isle covers are pretty rad though, more of that and less shit of people stripping down amazingly orchestrated songs and desecrating them with gross howling and fake "blues" feeling. "ba-da-bai-da bai-da BUUUHHHHH" sounds like shes being raped after smoking too much.
