When one thinks about bats, in general, the images conjured aren't typically the type of happy, innocent, loving winged creatures of the night. Of course, one could also very easily compare bats to indie hipsters: they roam around at night, rely on their ears as guidance, and love the city of Austin. Somehow I doubt that's the same crazy connection the Fruit Bats made when coining a name to match their charming independent folk/rock sound. Hopefully you're not unfamiliar with Chicago bred Fruit Bats, have a listen to one of my favorites if so:
[MP3] Fruit Bats - When U Love Somebody
Now the Fruit Bats are back in action, prepping the release of their fourth LP titled The Ruminant Band - their first release since 2005. The album is a fantastic piece of work that highlights the band's harmonies, thoughtful lyricism, and warm instrumentation. The group have released a new track from The Ruminant Band titled "My Unusual Friend" that contains a far larger sound than tracks heard on their previous LPs. The tune is driven by rhythmic piano, echoing guitar, and splashes of organ that sound as if the song is caught between midwestern motives and northwestern notions.
