Thursdays and Covers

I've not been feeling well this week - not one bit. Everyone around me has been getting sick (just that time of the year?) and my immune system has been working in overdrive - so here's to hoping I avoid that pesky swine sickness ravaging the populations. Aside from chicken noodle soup and some Airborne, nothing should make me feel better than a dosage of Thursdays and Covers! This week I'm paying homage to Jared and going back to the lovely lesser knowns.

[MP3] A Classic Education - Spanish Harlem

Some may recall Italy's A Classic Education from April, when we premiered their Best Regards 7" to the world. The trio have an incredibly warm sound, almost mimicking a summer day with hushed vocals emulating said day's pleasant breeze. Their take on the Phil Spector penned "Spanish Harlem" is an eerie twist on the original recording done by Ben E. King. They completely rework the orchestrated pop version, changing the tempo and mood with simple instrumentation - not to mention billowing vocals.
[MP3] The Chairs - Flume

Remember The Chairs? They made their first appearance on IGIF with a fine cover of "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" and then further tickled my eardrums with their original tune "Polly". I've been waiting patiently for the band to take the next step in their progression and while they properly prepare themselves, The Chairs have made a covers EP titled Can We Be Friends? (download for free). Aside from pulling at my heartstrings with a rendition of Jump, Little Children's "My Guitar", they also put together a haunting cover of Bon Iver's "Flume". They don't try to mimick the velvet vocals of Justin Vernon, instead reworking the song by utilizing backing vocals and effective, simple piano.
[MP3] Tiger Saw - Hard Life

Tiger Saw are an interesting musical outfit, if not confusing. The group have one constant member (also the founder) in Dylan Metrano but fluctuate in size from bare-bones soloist to upwards of a dozen different musicians - including artists like Jason Anderson and Jesse Rifkin. I plan on featuring their original material in the future but for now this excellent cover of Bonnie Prince Billy's "Hard Life", featuring a beautifully composed male-and-female folk duet, will hold me over.

Tiger Saw are also interesting in that they started off very much in the vein of slowcore bands like Low but made a big shift around 2005 to something bigger and noisier. I used to catch them every few months in Boston but the shift kinda annoyed me and we lost touch. But there are lots of photos and such of the band on my site.
