Thursdays and Covers

[MP3] Bon Iver - I Feel Like Going Home (Live/Rare)

Hooray for Thursday, considering I have a special treat for all of my Bon Iver-loving internet bretheren. This past Bonnaroo was quite the treat, although one of my biggest regrets was not being able to watch the entirety of Bon Iver's set. Only catching a few songs, the tent was overflowing with people yet retained an intimacy that lured in the likes of Drew Barrymore and Justin Long. Justin Vernon typically claims that he doesn't have very many songs to play so he's going to play 'em all, yet he graced everyone at Bonnaroo with a chilling cover of Yo La Tengo's "I Feel Like Going Home". It's a suitable song for Vernon to select, slow and beautiful but with an altered ending consisting of a blaring crescendo (and the help of Elvis Perkins).
[MP3] Taken By Trees - My Boys

Taken By Trees is the developing solo project of Victoria Bergsman, who shouldn't need much of an introduction after fronting successful Swede-pop act The Concretes and famously lending her vocals to Peter Bjorn and John's super-smash "Young Folks". I've been spinning her new release East of Eden recently and stumbled upon her rendition of Animal Collective's "My Girls" aptly titled "My Boys". Her voice is an enjoyable as ever and the instrumentation switches from electronic pop to a fusion of Afro/Swedish indie pop.
[MP3] Luke Temple - Doctor Robert

Keeping with the week and celebrating the musical creations of Luke Temple, I figured now was as good a time as ever to showcase an awesome Temple cover that is often overlooked. I stumbled upon a copy of Mojo Magazine's Revolver Reloaded, a dedication to the famed Beatles' album, featuring a slew of (mostly) unknown artists. The compilation of covers came out in 2006, shortly after Temple's debut LP and certainly long before Here We Go Magic conquered blogs and iPods alike. Temple takes the simple, two minute pop tune and signicantly slows the tempo down whilst adding glitchy, mechanized effects. Emily thinks he can sound like a sad alien, a humorous observation for such a spacey folk artist.
